Overview

The Muhoma Trail offers a rare opportunity to explore the mystical beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, Uganda’s famed “Mountains of the Moon.” Known for its lush Afro-montane forests, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks, the trail is ideal for trekkers looking for a shorter, yet immersive experience in one of Africa’s most biodiverse mountain ranges. This 5-day itinerary is designed for adventurers eager to experience the unique flora, fauna, and rugged landscapes without undertaking a full summit expedition.

Day 01 :

TRANSFER FROM KAMPALA TO KASESE

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel to start your journey to Kasese. The drive will take you about 7 hours. You will have enroute lunch and then proceed with your journey to, once you reach Kasese, transfer to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 02 :

NYAKALENGIJA TO OMUKAKIZZA CAMP (2,977 M)

Begin your trek with briefing from Mountain Rwenzori office in Nyakalengija (1,615 m), where you’ll meet your guides. After a briefing, the trail meanders through lowland farms and riverine forest, with sightings of colobus monkeys and a variety of birdlife. The trek gradually leads you into dense montane forest, characterized by towering trees draped in moss and lichen. Arrive at Omuka Kizza Camp, perched on a ridge with sweeping views of the Mubuku Valley below

Day 03 :

OMUKA KIZZA CAMP TO MAHOMA LAKE (3,515 M)

Have breakfast and begin on this scenic section of the trail. The path ascends through bamboo forests into the heather zone, where giant lobelias and everlasting flowers which are all over the place. You will get to see wild animals such as the Rwenzori turaco, bushbuck, you'll arrive at Lake Mahoma, a tranquil crater lake nestled high in the alpine zone. It’s a perfect place for reflection and photography.

Day 04 :

MAHOMA LAKE TO NYAKALENGIJA

Wake up early and have breakfast then descend back via mpanga ridge then mubuku valley through the heather and bamboo zones back into the lush forest, retracing part of the trail before connecting with a different route down to Nyakalengija. Expect a variety of different bird species and panoramic views across the foothills. Arrive back at the base in the late afternoon, marking the end of a fulfilling trek and sleep in Kasese town hotel

Day 05 :

TRANSFER BACK TO KAMPALA

After Breakfast you will check out of your hotel and transfer to Kampala with enroute lunch for lunch and the equator for photography.
