UGANDA’S BIG FIVE SAFARI

Uganda, often referred to as the Pearl of Africa, is known for its stunning landscapes, lush forests, and rich biodiversity. While the country is famously home to the rare mountain gorillas, there’s another wild side to explore the Big Five Safari.

The term “Big Five” originally referred to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot, but today, it represents the most sought-after wildlife sightings for safari-goers. In Uganda, you can spot all five: Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffaloes, and Rhinos.

Let’s dive into where to find each one and what makes Uganda’s safari experience truly unforgettable.

1. Lions – The Kings of the Savannah

Uganda is home to some of Africa’s most unique lion encounters. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, you’ll find the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, one of only two populations in the world that regularly hang out in fig trees. It’s a surreal sight-massive cats lounging in branches like oversized house cats.

You can also spot lions in Murchison Falls National Park, often seen stalking prey in the early mornings or late afternoons.

Best Park(s): Queen Elizabeth NP, Murchison Falls NP (Go for an early morning or evening game drive for the best chances of a sighting.)

 2. African Elephants – Gentle Giants

Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth, and Uganda offers incredible opportunities to witness them in their natural habitat. In Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, and Queen Elizabeth, you can observe herds roaming the plains, mud-bathing, or trumpeting loudly as they move through the savannah.

Best Park(s): Murchison Falls NP, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kidepo Valley NP

 3. Rhinos – Back from the Brink

Uganda’s rhino population was decimated in the 1980s due to poaching, but thanks to conservation efforts, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary now protects and breeds these magnificent creatures.

This is the only place in Uganda where you can track rhinos on foot-an up-close and thrilling experience you won’t soon forget.

Best Place: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Good to Know: Rhinos aren’t found in Uganda’s national parks yet, so Ziwa is a must-visit to complete your Big Five list.

 4. African Buffalo – The Most Formidable Herds

The African buffalo might not be as flashy as the other Big Five, but it’s just as impressive. These tough grazers are found in large herds across Uganda’s national parks and are known for their strong social bonds and surprising aggressiveness when threatened.

Best Park(s): Murchison Falls NP, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kidepo Valley NP

 5. Leopard – The Elusive Beauty

Spotting a leopard is always a treat they’re shy, stealthy, and mostly nocturnal. Uganda offers a good chance of sighting leopards during dawn or dusk game drives, especially in Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo.
